Apple is facing a major lawsuit after three users claimed they lost more than $1.8 million to a fake cryptocurrency wallet app that was allegedly approved and distributed through the company’s App Store.
The legal action, filed at the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, accuses the tech giant of failing to properly review the fraudulent application before making it available to millions of users.
According to the court documents, the victims believed they were downloading a genuine cryptocurrency wallet. However, the app was reportedly created by scammers who used it to steal their digital assets.
The three plaintiffs say they collectively lost more than $1.8 million in cryptocurrency as a result of the alleged scam.
The lawsuit argues that Apple’s reputation for offering a safe and trusted App Store gave users confidence that every app had been carefully reviewed for security and authenticity before approval.
However, the plaintiffs claim Apple’s screening process failed to detect the fake crypto wallet, allowing unsuspecting users to download the app and suffer significant financial losses.
The case has also renewed concerns about the growing number of fraudulent cryptocurrency applications targeting investors through trusted digital marketplaces.
If the lawsuit succeeds, Apple could face increased pressure to tighten its App Store review process, particularly for financial and cryptocurrency-related applications.
The legal challenge is the latest in a series of disputes involving Apple’s App Store, which has already come under scrutiny over developer policies, competition issues and consumer protection concerns.
