National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Nentawe Yilwatda, has stirred reactions after openly admitting that he enjoys watching opposition parties attack themselves ahead of the 2027 elections.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Monday, Yilwatda described the ongoing crisis within opposition parties as a “self-implosion,” insisting that the APC was not responsible for the confusion currently rocking rival political camps.
According to him, the ruling party is not even focused on fighting the opposition because opposition parties are already busy attacking one another.
“In the last three weeks, the APC is not fighting ADC or NDC. It is NDC versus ADC or ADC versus NDC,” he said.
“Actually, I watched with fun all the insults that the ADC is raining on the NDC and the NDC is returning those fireworks on the ADC. I watched the videos, and I laughed.”
The APC chairman said the crisis within the opposition showed that the real battle was happening among opposition parties themselves rather than against the ruling party.
“The self-implosion is in the opposition rather than in the APC,” he added.
When questioned about allegations that the APC may be sponsoring or fueling the crisis within opposition parties, Yilwatda denied direct involvement but admitted that weakening political opponents is part of politics.
“No, I can’t. But I will be happy if I can do it. That’s my job,” he said.
“If you are opposing me, should I be happy? If you oppose me because you are in the opposition, what’s my job? Of course, to stop the opposition.”
His comments have already triggered reactions online, with many Nigerians debating whether the ruling party is benefiting from the growing division among opposition groups ahead of the next general election.
Yilwatda also used the interview to defend the APC’s internal structure, claiming the party has stronger conflict-resolution mechanisms compared to other political parties in Nigeria.
According to him, the APC has established committees at both state and national levels specifically to handle disputes arising from party congresses, primaries and other internal issues.
Speaking further, the APC chairman explained that the party’s membership registration system relies heavily on data obtained from the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC).
“To register as a member of the APC, your name and primary data are sourced from NIMC,” he said.
“That’s the same primary data used to open bank accounts, obtain driver’s licences and secure international passports.”
He added that the APC sees itself as a “data-driven political party,” which he believes contributes to the party’s stability and political strength.
The latest remarks come at a time of increasing political tension and realignments ahead of the 2027 elections, with opposition parties facing internal disagreements and leadership battles across several states.
