Passengers aboard an Enugu Air flight escaped what could have been a tragic incident after the aircraft skidded off the runway while landing at the Benin Airport on Thursday. Fortunately, no injuries or fatalities were recorded.
The aircraft, with registration number 5N-ENR, was carrying 68 passengers, excluding crew members, when the incident occurred during landing.
Confirming the development in a statement shared on its official X account, Enugu Air assured the public that everyone on board was safely evacuated.
“All passengers and crew safely disembarked from the aircraft, with no injuries or casualties recorded,” the airline stated.
The airline also disclosed that the aircraft has been secured and that the appropriate aviation authorities have been notified in line with standard safety procedures.
“An assessment of the aircraft and the circumstances surrounding the occurrence is currently underway,” the statement added.
Enugu Air noted that the incident may lead to temporary adjustments to some of its flight schedules, assuring affected passengers that they would be contacted and provided with the necessary assistance.
The airline reiterated that the safety of its passengers, crew and operations remains its highest priority and promised to provide further updates through its official communication channels.
The incident comes exactly one year after Enugu Air commenced commercial operations in July 2025.
The airline was launched through a partnership between the Enugu State Government, led by Governor Peter Mbah, and XE Jet to fast-track the process of obtaining an Air Operator Certificate (AOC).
At the time, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, explained that the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) approved the partnership to enable the airline begin operations while completing its certification process.
Authorities are expected to determine the cause of the runway incident following ongoing investigations.
