The Kano State House of Assembly has called for an investigation into how monthly security allocations to local government councils are being utilised following renewed attacks by suspected bandits on border communities in the state.
The resolution followed a motion of urgent public importance moved by the member representing Ghari/Tsanyawa Constituency, Garba Ya’u Gwarmai, during Tuesday’s plenary presided over by Speaker Ismail Falgore.
Presenting the motion, Gwarmai said communities in Tsanyawa Local Government Area have suffered repeated attacks in recent weeks, with the worsening security situation disrupting farming, education, healthcare and business activities.
He alleged that the latest attack occurred in Yan Cibi community in Yan Kame Ward, where suspected bandits attempted to abduct residents and rustle cattle before they were repelled by security operatives.
According to the lawmaker, the attack claimed the life of a community leader and vigilante member, Malam Yusuf Adamu, while several other residents sustained gunshot injuries and are currently receiving treatment at Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital.
Gwarmai commended the military and police for recovering many of the stolen cattle but noted that the difficult terrain along the Katsina border prevented security personnel from pursuing the fleeing attackers.
He warned that the repeated attacks have forced many residents to flee their communities, with others abandoning farming due to fears of further violence.
The lawmaker urged both the Federal Government and the Kano State Government to strengthen security in the affected areas by deploying more troops and improving logistics for security agencies.
He also questioned how the reported ₦25 million monthly security allocation to local governments has been spent, alleging that soldiers operating in the affected communities lacked basic logistical support despite the availability of the funds.
Gwarmai recalled that the Assembly had previously directed local government authorities to submit reports detailing how the security funds were utilised but said the directive had not been obeyed.
Following deliberations, the Assembly mandated its relevant committee to investigate the use of the security funds and ensure the affected local government accounts for the allocations.
Lawmakers also urged the state and Federal Governments to take urgent steps to curb the growing insecurity in Kano’s border communities before it spreads to other parts of the state.
