Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has expressed joy over the rescue of the pupils and teachers abducted in Oriire Local Government Area, describing their release after 57 days in captivity as a huge relief for the state and their families.
Reacting to the development on Friday, Makinde thanked the security agencies and President Bola Tinubu for their efforts in securing the victims’ freedom.
“It’s such a big relief for all of us. I think it’s a big relief for everyone who has been waiting for the past 57 days,” the governor said.
He also commended the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services (DSS), the military, and other security commanders for their commitment throughout the rescue mission.
“I’m overjoyed right now and cannot really say much. I will speak later when I can put my thoughts together,” Makinde added.
Earlier, the Presidency confirmed that all the abducted pupils and teachers had been rescued during a coordinated security operation. Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga disclosed that eight suspected kidnappers were arrested, while several others were neutralised.
He also stated that the operation was carried out without any ransom payment or prisoner exchange, adding that the gang leader whose release was demanded by the kidnappers remains in custody and is facing prosecution.
In a video released after the rescue, one of the freed teachers thanked President Tinubu and the security agencies for ensuring their safe return.
“We are grateful, Mr. President. Every security operative tried so much, and that is why we are still alive today. Thank you very much,” the teacher said.
The victims were kidnapped after gunmen attacked schools in Oriire LGA on May 15, sparking nationwide concern before their eventual rescue.
