The Cross River State Police Command has arrested a 39-year-old man, Udeme Emmanuel Ekpeme, for allegedly posing as a medical doctor and defrauding a woman of ₦500,000 with a fake promise to secure jobs for her children at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH).
The suspect was arrested by operatives of the Uwanse Police Division following a petition filed by Mrs. Edemawan Samuel, who accused him of impersonating a doctor to gain her trust before collecting the money.
Police said preliminary investigations indicate that Ekpeme used the false identity to deceive the victim, while exhibits connected to the case have been recovered.
Confirming the arrest, the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Sunday Eitokpah, said the Commissioner of Police had ordered a thorough investigation into the matter.
“The Commissioner of Police has directed that this case be thoroughly investigated to determine whether there are other victims. The suspect will be charged to court as soon as sufficient evidence is established,” Eitokpah said.
He added that detectives are expanding the investigation to uncover the full extent of the suspect’s activities and identify any accomplices.
The police also assured residents that updates would be provided as the investigation progresses.
