Former Kano State Governor and vice-presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Rabiu Kwankwaso, has revealed that the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, signed a written agreement committing to serve only one four-year term if elected president in 2027.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television, Kwankwaso said he believes Obi will honour the agreement, adding that he has no reason to doubt the former Anambra State governor’s integrity.
“I personally believe him, and I don’t think, based on what I now know about him, he will change his mind when the time comes. We are all gentlemen, even though we accepted to put it on paper,” Kwankwaso said.
According to him, the agreement provides that after Obi’s single four-year tenure, power will return to the North.
Kwankwaso disclosed that both leaders signed two separate agreements—one involving the party and another between themselves—to reaffirm the arrangement.
He explained that the decision was based on the belief that allowing the South to complete another four-year presidency before power returns to the North would promote national unity and political balance.
“After four years, we will work together so that power returns to the North. That is the general agreement,” he stated.
Addressing questions about why he accepted the vice-presidential position despite previously seeking the presidency, Kwankwaso said the party was focused on its immediate goal of winning the 2027 election while also keeping its long-term plans in view.
Peter Obi has repeatedly maintained that if elected president in 2027, he would serve only one term, insisting that four years would be enough to implement his agenda and ensure stability.
His one-term pledge has, however, drawn criticism from some opposition parties, which have questioned whether such a promise would be kept if he wins the election.
