The All Progressives Congress (APC) has recorded a landslide victory in the Edo State local government elections, winning all 18 chairmanship seats and 192 councillorship positions contested across the state.
The results were announced on Sunday by the Chairman of the Edo State Independent Electoral Commission (EDSIEC), Jonathan Aifuobhokhan, at the commission’s headquarters in Benin City.
According to Aifuobhokhan, the election was conducted in line with the provisions of the Edo State Local Government Electoral Law, with voting, counting, collation and result declaration completed across the state’s 18 local government areas.
He said the commission was satisfied with the conduct of its returning officers, describing them as professional and impartial throughout the electoral process.
“After the completion of collation at the ward and local government levels, the duly appointed returning officers declared the winners in their respective areas,” Aifuobhokhan said.
The EDSIEC chairman confirmed that the APC won every chairmanship and councillorship seat, giving the party a clean sweep of the election.
Although he acknowledged that a few operational challenges were experienced in some locations, he maintained that they did not affect the overall outcome of the polls.
Aifuobhokhan also commended voters for participating peacefully in the election and appreciated Governor Monday Okpebholo for allowing the electoral commission to operate without interference.
He announced that certificates of return would be presented to all successful candidates on Monday.
The EDSIEC chairman advised any political party or candidate dissatisfied with the election results to seek redress through the appropriate legal channels.
He also reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to improving future elections through continuous stakeholder engagement and regular reviews of the electoral process.
