US President Donald Trump has criticised those calling for a slowdown in the development of artificial intelligence (AI), describing such voices as “negative” forces.
Trump made the comments on Sunday while speaking to reporters during a visit to Ireland, amid growing debate over the pace at which companies are developing increasingly powerful AI systems.
“I think you have a lot of negative” forces “that are bringing it up that shouldn’t be bringing it up, and they’re bringing up things that won’t happen,” the US president told reporters during a visit to Ireland.
His remarks came days after AI researcher Jacob Coxon announced his departure from the industry, accusing his former employers, OpenAI and Anthropic, of “gambling with our lives” in the race to develop AI models capable of improving themselves.
“The people building AI earnestly believe that it could kill us all by the end of the decade,” Coxon wrote on X.
Coxon’s comments came as concerns continue to grow over the potential dangers posed by highly advanced or “superintelligent” AI systems.
The debate intensified after Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei called on AI companies to slow the pace of development, arguing that the rapid advancement of the technology could create risks that safety measures may struggle to keep up with.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Elon Musk, who owns xAI, subsequently expressed support for Amodei’s assessment, adding to growing pressure on AI companies to strengthen oversight and safety measures.
Altman also said in an interview released on Saturday that OpenAI would not go public this year, citing safety concerns.
