South African football has been thrown into mourning following the death of Jayden Adams, the Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder who recently represented the country at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. He was 25 years old.
Adams was reportedly found dead on Saturday morning at a residential building in Schotschekloof, Cape Town. Authorities and his family are yet to announce the cause of his death.
The tragedy comes just weeks after the footballer lost his 72-year-old grandmother, Marianna Adams, who passed away on June 17, a day before South Africa’s crucial World Cup group-stage match against the Czech Republic.
Despite the heartbreaking loss, Adams remained with the national team and featured in the match, showing remarkable commitment during a difficult period.
His mentor and family representative, Brendine Johnson, described the news as devastating.
“This passing has ripped everybody apart… Nobody expected this. I spoke with him on Thursday, and he was positive about returning after the World Cup,” Johnson said.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) and the South African Football Players Union (SAFPU) also paid tribute to the late midfielder, describing his death as a huge loss to South African football.
“Jayden had only recently represented South Africa at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, carrying the hopes of the nation with pride, courage and distinction,” SAFPU said.
South Africa’s Minister of Sport, Gayton McKenzie, also expressed shock over Adams’ passing.
“It is with profound shock and a heavy heart that I have learnt of the passing of Jayden Adams… South Africa has lost one of its brightest football talents,” he said.
Adams was part of the Bafana Bafana squad that made history by reaching the FIFA World Cup knockout stage for the first time, featuring in all three group-stage matches.
At club level, he enjoyed a successful 2025/26 season with Mamelodi Sundowns, helping the team win the CAF Champions League after previously starring for Stellenbosch FC.
