Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has disclosed that the pupils and teachers rescued after spending weeks in captivity in Oriire Local Government Area will remain under medical observation for 48 hours before being handed over to the Oyo State Government.
The governor made this known on Saturday during a visit to the rescued victims at the 2 Division Nigerian Army Medical Services, Odogbo Barracks, Ibadan, where they are receiving medical treatment following their release.
Describing the rescue as a moment of gratitude and relief, Makinde thanked God and praised the security agencies for successfully bringing the victims home.
“Today is a day of gratitude to Almighty God. We are thankful that these innocent children and their teachers have regained their freedom after enduring a traumatic experience,” he said.
The governor confirmed that 39 pupils and five of the seven abducted teachers had been rescued.
He commended the Nigerian Army and other security agencies for their bravery and professionalism throughout the rescue mission.
“Their professionalism and determination made this successful outcome possible, and the people of Oyo State remain deeply grateful for their sacrifices and dedication,” Makinde stated.
The governor, however, noted that the operation came at a painful cost, revealing that some security personnel lost their lives during the mission.
“We mourn their loss, extend our heartfelt condolences to their families, and assure them that their sacrifices will never be forgotten,” he said.
Speaking on the condition of the rescued victims, Makinde explained that many of them appeared physically weak and emotionally affected after their ordeal, making medical care and psychological support necessary.
“They will receive the best medical care, counselling and rehabilitation necessary to help them recover fully,” the governor assured.
According to him, military doctors advised that the victims remain under observation for 48 hours before undergoing a final medical and psychological assessment ahead of their handover to the state government.
Makinde also revealed that arrangements were being made for family members to visit the victims, adding that one of the rescued girls had repeatedly requested to see her mother.
He urged Nigerians to remain united in supporting security agencies in the fight against insecurity, stressing that collective efforts are needed to defeat criminal elements across the country.
The governor added that the Oyo State Government would provide a detailed briefing in the coming days on the circumstances surrounding the abduction and the successful rescue operation.
