Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal has flagged off the 2026 wet-season fertiliser distribution programme, providing 72,000 bags of fertiliser and other farming inputs to support farmers across the state.
The programme was launched on Friday at the Trade Fair Complex in Gusau, the Zamfara State capital.
According to a statement issued by the governor’s spokesperson, Sulaiman Bala Idris, the intervention includes 72,000 bags of fertiliser, 200,000 litres of herbicides, 100 crop residue crushers, 100 grass choppers, 100 feed milling machines, improved pasture seeds, 20 motorcycles and 20 mobile phones for agricultural extension workers.
Speaking at the event, Governor Lawal described agriculture as the backbone of Zamfara’s economy and pledged to revive the state’s farming sector through modern agricultural practices.
“Our goal is to restore and expand Zamfara’s farming legacy by shifting from subsistence to productive, tech-driven, market-oriented agriculture,” he said.
The governor noted that his administration is working to improve access to quality farm inputs, mechanisation, irrigation, extension services and climate-smart farming techniques to boost productivity.
He added that improving security across the state has enabled more communities to return to farming and rebuild their livelihoods.
“As peace returns, more communities are reopening, more farmlands are under cultivation, and more families are rebuilding their livelihoods,” Lawal stated.
The governor also highlighted the state’s partnerships with the Federal Government, development agencies and international organisations through programmes such as FADAMA III, NG-CARES, SPIN, ZACADEP, SAPZ and IFAD-supported initiatives, which have helped thousands of farmers access improved agricultural support.
According to the state government, the fertiliser and other agricultural assets will be distributed across all 147 political wards in Zamfara’s 14 local government areas.
Each ward will receive 340 bags of fertiliser, while every local government area will be allocated 8,000 litres of herbicides.
Governor Lawal reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to transforming Zamfara into one of Nigeria’s leading agricultural hubs through sustained investment in the sector.
