Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia has condemned the deadly attack on Akpachi Village and the Otukpo-Nobi community in Otukpo Local Government Area, directing security agencies to track down those responsible and ensure they face justice.
In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Tersoo Kula, the governor described the attack by suspected armed herdsmen as a barbaric assault on innocent residents and a serious violation of the sanctity of human life.
According to the statement, the attackers invaded Akpachi Village between 3:00 a.m. and 4:00 a.m. while residents were asleep, killing several people and leaving many others injured.
Reacting to the incident, Governor Alia expressed deep sadness, noting that the attack came despite ongoing efforts by the state government, traditional rulers and security agencies to restore peace across Benue State.
“These acts of mindless bloodshed are a direct attempt to sabotage the progress of our state,” the governor said.
He sympathised with the people of Otukpo and the entire Benue South Senatorial District, assuring residents that his administration would not allow criminal elements to force communities off their ancestral lands.
“Your lives are precious, and I can assure you that your ancestral lands will not be surrendered to fear,” Alia stated.
The governor stressed that the people of Benue have consistently embraced peace but warned that such restraint should not be mistaken for weakness.
He directed all security agencies in the state to intensify surveillance, strengthen border patrols and work with neighbouring states to apprehend those behind the attack.
Governor Alia also ordered the deployment of additional security personnel and resources to vulnerable communities to prevent further violence.
He urged residents to remain vigilant and support security agencies by providing credible and timely intelligence.
“Security is a collective responsibility, and your information is a vital tool in our defence,” he added.
The governor extended his condolences to the families of those who lost their loved ones and prayed for the speedy recovery of those injured, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to protecting lives and property across the state.
