The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has alleged that the Federal Government is deliberately keeping former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai in detention to weaken the opposition ahead of the 2027 general election.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, insisted that while the ADC supports the prosecution of anyone with a legitimate case to answer, it believes El-Rufai is being denied fair treatment despite facing bailable offences.
“The thinking within the ADC is that the APC government has concluded that they will not release Malam Nasir El-Rufai until after the elections,” Abdullahi said.
He claimed the ruling party fears El-Rufai’s influence within the opposition and is using legal processes to keep him in custody.
Abdullahi also expressed concern over El-Rufai’s health, alleging that his condition has deteriorated while in detention.
“If anything happens to Malam Nasir El-Rufai in detention, President Bola Tinubu will be held personally responsible,” he said.
The ADC spokesman further accused the APC of focusing more on the 2027 elections than addressing Nigeria’s pressing challenges, describing the Renewed Hope Agenda as a slogan that has failed to deliver meaningful results.
El-Rufai is currently facing separate trials over alleged financial misconduct and wire-tapping charges filed by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) and the Department of State Services (DSS).
