Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has appealed to traditional rulers across the state to work closely with his administration in tackling insecurity, saying lasting peace can only be achieved through grassroots collaboration.
The governor made the call on Thursday while hosting traditional rulers from Edo Central and Edo North Senatorial Districts at the Government House in Benin City. He described royal fathers as key partners in the fight against kidnapping and other criminal activities because they have firsthand knowledge of what happens in their communities.
According to Okpebholo, recent investigations into kidnapping cases revealed that many crimes are aided by local informants who monitor the movements and financial status of residents.
“There are so many security challenges, and the best people to help me fight insecurity are the traditional rulers. You know your communities because you know those who live there and those coming into the area,” the governor said.
He urged the monarchs not to protect criminals and encouraged them to educate young people on the dangers of crime.
“Let nobody encourage crime. Our children should not be involved. They should understand that crime is dangerous,” he added.
The governor also appealed to the royal fathers to mobilise support for President Bola Tinubu ahead of the next presidential election, expressing confidence that Edo State could deliver massive votes for the President.
Speaking on behalf of the traditional rulers, the Ojuromi of Uromi, HRM Anslem Edenojie II, passed a vote of confidence in Governor Okpebholo, praising his development efforts and assuring him of the continued support of traditional institutions in promoting peace, security and development across the state.
