The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has warned Nigerians against a fake website circulating on social media, describing it as a phishing scam designed to steal personal information under the guise of the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise.
According to the Commission, the fraudulent message, titled “INEC ONLINE VOTERS REGISTRATION 2026 ONGOING,” is being shared widely on WhatsApp and other social media platforms, directing users to an unofficial website.
The fake message falsely claims that the deadline for the CVR exercise is August 17, 2026, and also alleges that applicants’ Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) will be delivered to their home addresses.
Reacting to the development, INEC Deputy Director of Information and Publicity, Wilfred Ifogah, urged Nigerians not to click on the link or submit their personal details.
“INEC does not use third-party blogging links or private URLs for official exercises, nor does it deliver PVCs to private residences,” Ifogah said.
He warned that the fake portal was created to harvest personal data, exposing unsuspecting users to identity theft and cyber fraud.
The Commission advised Nigerians to rely only on INEC’s official communication channels for information on the Continuous Voter Registration exercise and other electoral activities.
