The Allied People’s Movement (APM) has called on President Bola Tinubu’s administration to give Nigerians a full account of the trillions of naira generated from the removal of fuel subsidy, insisting that citizens deserve to know how the funds have been spent.
In a statement issued on Thursday by its National Publicity Secretary, Abubakar Yusuf, the opposition party said the Federal Government must publish a detailed and verifiable report showing the total amount saved since the subsidy was removed in May 2023, the projects funded with the money, and the impact of those projects on Nigerians.
The party argued that despite government assurances that the subsidy savings are being invested in critical sectors, many Nigerians continue to face rising living costs, worsening poverty and economic hardship.
According to the APM, “The vague claims by the APC government that the proceeds are being invested in critical sectors without real figures and specific projects or programmes are completely unacceptable and cannot substitute for transparency and accountability.”
The party also claimed that the removal of fuel subsidy triggered sharp increases in fuel prices, transportation costs, food prices, school fees, rent and other essential expenses, leaving many families struggling to cope.
APM maintained that while it supports reforms capable of driving national development, the success of such policies should be measured by their impact on citizens rather than official statements.
It therefore urged the Tinubu administration to publicly disclose the total subsidy savings since May 2023, how the funds have been spent, the beneficiaries of government interventions and the measurable results achieved.
