The Abia State Government has ordered the demolition of a distressed four-storey building located at No. 71 Clifford Road, Aba, after officials discovered severe structural defects that could lead to its collapse.
The directive followed a report of visible cracks on the building, prompting a swift inspection by the Greater Aba Development Authority (GADA).
According to the Director-General of GADA, Architect Uche Ukeje, preliminary findings revealed extensive cracks around the building’s foundation, indicating that the structure had been seriously compromised.
“The defect poses a significant structural risk and could lead to the collapse of the building if urgent action is not taken. As a result, the building has been declared unsafe for habitation,” Ukeje said.
Following the assessment, all occupants were safely evacuated while arrangements were made for the building to be demolished in a controlled manner to prevent casualties and protect nearby properties.
Ukeje disclosed that a comprehensive investigation is still underway to determine the exact cause of the structural failure.
He assured residents that the situation was under control and urged the public to stay away from the affected area while demolition and other safety operations are carried out.
“The Authority wishes to assure members of the public that there is no cause for panic. The situation is under control, and all necessary safety measures have been implemented to protect lives and property,” he added.
The government also encouraged residents to promptly report any buildings showing signs of structural distress to the appropriate authorities to prevent future tragedies.
