Award-winning actress and filmmaker Funke Akindele has responded to critics who believe her movie success is simply the result of dancing on social media.
Speaking in a recent interview with BellaNaija, the box-office star said her achievements are built on hard work, creativity and consistency, not just dance videos used to promote her films.
Funke stressed that people should stop reducing her career to dancing, explaining that she does much more behind the scenes to ensure her projects succeed.
“Nobody asked me to dance. I do more than dance. I even make nails for people. Stop belittling my work to dancing,” she said.
The actress also reflected on her journey in Nollywood, sharing insights into filmmaking, acting, movie marketing and distribution. According to her, every successful project requires dedication and a willingness to do whatever it takes to reach audiences.
Her comments come months after filmmaker Kunle Afolayan criticised the trend of actors dancing to promote their movies. He argued that he was not interested in chasing ₦1 billion or ₦2 billion at the box office if the returns were not worthwhile, while also taking a swipe at colleagues who rely on dance videos for promotion.
Funke later fired back, urging Afolayan not to let jealousy get in the way of celebrating others’ success.
The conversation also drew reactions from other Nollywood stars. Actress Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde said she would not dance to market her movies, describing such an approach as unprofessional, while Iyabo Ojo defended colleagues who use different promotional strategies, insisting everyone should be free to do what works for them.
Veteran actress Chinyere Wilfred also joined the debate, sharing a video of herself dancing while appearing to mock the growing trend.
