Two people have lost their lives in a tragic road accident after a truck and a commercial bus collided and burst into flames along the Ogbere–J4 corridor in Ogun State.
The fatal crash, which occurred in the early hours of Thursday at Ogbere Junction, was confirmed by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ogun State Sector Command.
According to the FRSC, the accident happened at about 5:10 a.m. and involved a white Mack truck with registration number ABC660XC and an orange Peugeot J5 commercial bus, which had no visible registration number.
The corps disclosed that four adult men were involved in the crash. Sadly, two died instantly, while the other two escaped without injuries.
Preliminary investigations by the FRSC attributed the accident to route violation and excessive speeding, which resulted in a violent collision that caused the commercial bus to catch fire.
“The probable causes of the crash were route violation (RTV) and speed violation (SPV). The impact of the collision led to the Peugeot J5 bus catching fire, with its front section completely burnt,” the FRSC said.
The agency also revealed that its emergency rescue team arrived at the scene within two minutes after receiving the distress call and immediately began traffic control operations to ease congestion while clearing the wreckage.
“FRSC rescue personnel arrived at the scene within two minutes of being notified and immediately commenced traffic management. The affected lane was diverted to the alternative carriageway while efforts continued to remove the wreckage and restore free flow of traffic,” the statement added.
The remains of the two deceased victims were later evacuated by officers of the Nigeria Police Motor Traffic Division (MTD), Ogbere Division, and deposited at a nearby mortuary.
Reacting to the incident, the Ogun State Sector Commander, Corps Commander Oludare Ogunjobi, expressed condolences to the bereaved families while urging motorists to obey traffic regulations to prevent avoidable tragedies.
“Drivers must avoid speeding and route violations, especially during periods of poor visibility and on wet road surfaces. These dangerous driving behaviours remain major causes of fatal crashes on Nigerian roads,” Ogunjobi warned.
The FRSC reaffirmed its commitment to improving road safety through continuous enforcement, public awareness campaigns and rapid emergency response, while advising motorists to always observe speed limits and ensure their vehicles are roadworthy before travelling.
