Nigerian Afrobeats star Davido has ruled out supporting the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 presidential election, despite his uncle, Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, declaring support for President Bola Tinubu.
The Grammy-nominated singer made his position known during an interview with News Central in August, explaining that his uncle’s political decisions would not determine his own choice of presidential candidate.
Davido said he had yet to identify a candidate he wanted to support in the next election, adding that while his position could change, he would not be backing the APC.
“I shouldn’t have said we aren’t supporting anyone for president because my uncle declared his support for Tinubu immediately after he won the election. But as for me, I’m not compelled to support anyone. Personally, I haven’t seen anyone I want to support,” he said.
The singer explained that his previous political choices were influenced partly by family ties and party affiliations.
He disclosed that he supported former Vice President Atiku Abubakar when they were both associated with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). In 2015, he also backed the APC following its formation through a merger, noting that his late uncle, known as Seerubawon, was part of the party.
“In the past, I’ve supported Atiku when we were in the PDP. Also, in 2015, when the APC was formed through a merger, my late uncle Seerubawon was part of the party, so I supported the APC. But right now, I don’t have a presidential candidate. That might change, but it definitely won’t be the APC,” Davido said.
The singer has previously been actively involved in his uncle’s political campaigns. He supported Adeleke during his re-election bid as Osun governor, which he won on the platform of the Accord Party.
During the campaign, Davido also clashed with members of the APC, who were political opponents of his uncle.
He accused former Osun State governor Gboyega Oyetola of political desperation and attempting to cause unrest in the state. Davido also alleged that House of Representatives member James Faleke pressured the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to alter Adeleke’s election results.
Despite Adeleke’s support for Tinubu, Davido’s latest comments make clear that he intends to make his own decision regarding the 2027 presidential election.
