Babcock University has distanced itself from fake academic certificates circulating online, warning that the institution does not recognise the academic classification “First Class Upper” and that anyone involved in producing or using such documents could face legal action.
The Ogun State-based university issued the warning in a public statement after discovering forged certificates falsely linked to the institution. The clarification followed the circulation of a certificate shared on social media by comedian and content creator Carter Efe, which claimed he earned a Biochemistry degree with a “First Class Upper” classification.
According to the university, one of the forged documents was presented as an honorary certificate allegedly issued by the “Babcock University Biochemistry Computer Club” in recognition of academic excellence.
Babcock dismissed the document as fake, stressing that it does not issue honorary certificates for undergraduate academic achievements. The institution explained that outstanding academic performance is recognised only through its official degree certificates and academic transcripts issued by the Office of the Registrar.
The university also clarified that “First Class Upper” is not one of its approved degree classifications, noting that the correct and officially recognised designation is “First Class Honours.”
Management urged employers, educational institutions, government agencies, professional bodies and the general public to disregard the forged certificate and any similar documents not issued through its official academic processes.
Babcock further warned that anyone found producing, circulating or using fake academic credentials to secure employment, admission, promotion, professional recognition or any other benefit could face investigation and prosecution. It also vowed to pursue both civil and criminal legal action against individuals or groups unlawfully using the university’s name, logo or academic documents.
The institution advised anyone seeking to verify a Babcock University certificate to do so through the Office of the Registrar to help protect the integrity of its academic records.
