The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has destroyed more than 12 tonnes of illicit drugs confiscated during intelligence-led operations across Kano State and the Malam Aminu Kano International Airport.
The public destruction exercise, carried out by the agency’s Kano Strategic Command, underscores NDLEA’s continued efforts to combat drug trafficking and keep dangerous substances off the streets.
According to the agency, the destroyed drugs weighed 12,233.946 kilograms and consisted of various narcotic and psychotropic substances recovered through targeted raids, surveillance operations and other enforcement activities.
The command also revealed that since January 2026, it has arrested 904 suspects, including 869 men and 35 women, seized over 2.5 tonnes of illegal drugs, and secured more than 54 convictions. Some convicted offenders were handed prison sentences of up to 15 years, highlighting the agency’s commitment to prosecuting drug-related crimes.
Speaking during the exercise, Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf said the destruction of the seized drugs sends a strong message that the state will not allow criminal networks to endanger communities through drug abuse and trafficking.
The governor stressed that alongside law enforcement, the state is investing in rehabilitation and youth reintegration programmes, including support for the Kiru Rehabilitation Centre, anti-drug initiatives, and the Safe Corridor Project.
He disclosed that more than 400 youths arrested during anti-drug operations have been rehabilitated and reintegrated into society, while major drug traffickers continue to face prosecution. He also pledged the state government’s continued support for intelligence sharing, logistics and rehabilitation programmes.
