The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has expressed support for the proposed establishment of state police, saying the reform could help tackle Nigeria’s growing insecurity if properly implemented.
The party, however, warned that political interests must not be allowed to undermine the initiative or turn it into a tool for abuse.
Speaking with Vanguard, PDP National Publicity Secretary Jungudo Haruna Mohammed said the party was prepared to support any genuine effort aimed at improving security across the country.
“We cannot allow political considerations to prevent us from embracing initiatives that will strengthen national security,” he said.
Mohammed noted that decentralising policing would enable local communities to play a more active role in protecting their areas and responding quickly to security threats.
While acknowledging concerns that state police could be misused by politicians, he argued that adequate safeguards and accountability measures could minimise such risks.
“If properly established and safeguarded against abuse, state police will help reduce insecurity. Local communities should take responsibility for protecting their environments,” he stated.
The PDP spokesman also pointed to countries such as the United States, where decentralised policing has been successfully implemented, saying Nigeria could adopt a similar approach with transparency and public trust.
He further urged political leaders to ensure the system is managed responsibly while embracing technology to strengthen the fight against insecurity.
“The implementation of state policing should be guided by transparency and accountability. Our leaders must also embrace technology in tackling insecurity,” he added.
The comments come as the proposed State Police Bill moves through the constitutional amendment process.
