Abia State University (ABSU), Uturu, has commenced the screening of first-class graduates eligible for the automatic employment promised by Abia State Governor Alex Otti.
The exercise follows the governor’s announcement during the university’s 30th–32nd combined convocation ceremony in March 2026, where he pledged to retain all qualified first-class graduates as Graduate Assistants after completing the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).
The screening, which began on Wednesday, is for graduates who have successfully completed their NYSC programme and are awaiting the issuance of their employment letters.
Speaking during the exercise, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ndukwe Okeudo, represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Prof. Roseline Ndimele, praised the graduates for their outstanding academic performance.
“The university remains committed to supporting excellence and rewarding hard work,” the Vice-Chancellor said.
He explained that graduates who have completed their NYSC are eligible to submit their application documents, while those still serving or yet to begin the programme should return after completing their national service.
The Registrar, Dr. Acho Elendu, said the screening exercise was organised in line with Governor Otti’s directive and urged applicants to follow the guidelines carefully to avoid mistakes during the process.
Governor Otti had also announced that the automatic employment opportunity would be extended to the best graduating students in each department with a minimum cumulative grade point average of 4.25.
In addition, he promised postgraduate scholarships up to doctoral level for all first-class graduates across the three convocation sets, provided they accept the teaching appointments offered by the university.
About 38 first-class graduates reportedly participated in the screening exercise and are expected to receive their employment letters soon.
