The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, has cautioned corps members to stay away from partisan political activities as preparations for the 2027 general elections begin to gather momentum.
Speaking during a town hall meeting with corps members in Gombe State, the NYSC boss stressed that the scheme’s reputation and credibility have been built on political neutrality for over five decades.
He warned corps members against attending campaign events while wearing NYSC uniforms or any official insignia, noting that such actions could create the impression that the scheme is supporting a political party.
“NYSC is apolitical. We do not align with any political party.”
Nafiu explained that corps members have continued to earn the trust of Nigerians and the international community, especially in their role as ad hoc staff during elections, because they are seen as neutral and professional.
He urged them not to jeopardize that trust through actions that could damage the image of the scheme.
The DG also encouraged corps members to focus on personal development, hard work and entrepreneurship rather than political distractions.
He advised them to use social media responsibly, build meaningful relationships and contribute positively to national development.
“You have a chance to make a difference. Believe in yourself and run your race.”
During the event, Nafiu also announced the donation of a cow to the camp community, drawing excitement from the corps members.
Meanwhile, NYSC officials in Gombe disclosed that over 1,300 corps members have been registered for the current orientation exercise, while security measures, including drone surveillance, have been deployed to ensure safety within the camp.
The warning comes as political activities ahead of the 2027 elections gradually begin across the country.
