There are fresh signs of hope for the 39 schoolchildren and seven teachers abducted in Oyo State, as security forces intensify efforts to secure their release.
Reports indicate that troops involved in the rescue mission have successfully blocked major escape routes around the forest where the victims are believed to be held, increasing pressure on the kidnappers.
The victims were abducted on May 15, 2026, when armed terrorists attacked three schools in Ahoro-Esinle, Yawota and Alawusa communities in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.
According to security sources, the kidnappers have now been effectively surrounded within a section of the National Park forest, with troops restricting their movement and cutting off possible exit points.
Sources familiar with the operation revealed that the sustained pressure from security agencies may be forcing the terrorists into a corner, raising hopes that the captives could soon regain their freedom.
Kidnappers Reportedly Scale Back Demands
Investigations suggest that the abductors initially made several demands, including ransom payments, the release of detained terrorist leaders, provision of vehicles and other conditions.
However, security sources said the group has reportedly dropped some of those demands as military pressure continues to mount around their hideout.
The kidnappers are now said to be focusing mainly on ransom negotiations as security forces tighten their grip on the area.
Security Agencies Intensify Anti-Terror Operations
Authorities also revealed that intelligence reports had previously warned of possible attacks on schools within the area, prompting preventive measures in some communities.
Security officials believe ongoing military offensives against terrorist groups across Nigeria have forced many insurgents to abandon traditional strongholds and target vulnerable communities.
Recent operations against Ansaru, Boko Haram and ISWAP members have reportedly led to the elimination and arrest of several key commanders, while others have fled across borders.
A senior security source expressed confidence that the ongoing campaign against terrorism would ultimately succeed.
Police Reject Claims Linking Igboho To Victims’ Release
Meanwhile, the Oyo State Police Command has dismissed claims that Yoruba Nation agitator, Sunday Igboho, played a role in the alleged release of another group of kidnap victims in Igboho community.
The police said there is no verified evidence linking Igboho to any rescue operation and urged the public to rely on official information rather than unconfirmed reports circulating online.
The development followed widespread reactions after Igboho issued a public ultimatum to suspected kidnappers and their alleged collaborators in the area.
As security operations continue, authorities remain optimistic that the abducted schoolchildren and teachers will soon be rescued safely.
