A shocking incident has unfolded in Kaduna State after an angry mob reportedly stormed a police station, seized a woman accused of child theft and set her ablaze despite efforts by officers to protect her.
The tragic event occurred in Maraban Jos, where the woman had earlier been rescued by police following allegations that she was involved in child theft.
According to the Kaduna State Police Command, officers responded to a distress call and successfully removed the woman from a crowd that was attacking her. She was then taken into protective custody at the local police station while investigations were being initiated.
However, the situation later spiraled out of control when hundreds of residents reportedly gathered at the station, overpowered officers on duty and forcefully removed the woman from custody.
Police said the mob subsequently killed the woman and burned her body in what authorities have described as a disturbing act of jungle justice.
The Command stressed that the accusation against the victim had not been backed by evidence at the time of the incident.
Reacting to the development, police authorities condemned the killing, describing it as a serious attack on the rule of law and warning against mob action.
The Kaduna State Commissioner of Police, Rabiu Muhammad, vowed that everyone involved in the attack would be identified and prosecuted.
Police confirmed that several suspects have already been arrested, while efforts are ongoing to track down others linked to the incident.
The tragic killing has reignited concerns about the growing trend of mob justice in parts of Nigeria, despite repeated warnings from security agencies that suspects should be handed over for proper investigation and prosecution.
Authorities have urged residents to report crimes through lawful channels rather than taking matters into their own hands.
