Human rights activist and publisher of Sahara Reporters, Omoyele Sowore, has been remanded in Kuje Correctional Centre by a Federal High Court in Abuja following developments in his ongoing cybercrime trial.
The court ordered that Sowore remain in custody until June 24, when it is expected to hear his application challenging the revocation of the bail earlier granted to him.
The decision follows a previous ruling by Justice Mohammed Umar, who revoked Sowore’s bail after the activist allegedly failed to appear in court for the continuation of his trial.
The Department of State Services (DSS) is prosecuting the former presidential candidate over claims that he referred to President Bola Tinubu as a “criminal” in posts shared on social media in 2025.
Following his absence during an earlier court session, the trial judge issued a bench warrant for his arrest and ordered that he be brought before the court.
At Monday’s proceedings, Justice Umar also dismissed an application seeking his withdrawal from the case over allegations of bias.
Sowore, who is facing a two-count cybercrime charge, had previously chosen to represent himself after members of his legal team withdrew from the matter.
Despite the latest court ruling, the activist appeared defiant, assuring his supporters that he remains committed to his beliefs and pursuit of justice.
The case is expected to continue on Wednesday when the court resumes hearing on the matter.
