Former Anambra State Governor and Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has called on President Bola Tinubu to resign, arguing that the current administration has failed to address key challenges facing Nigerians.
Obi made the statement while reacting to the resignation announcement of British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, saying the development prompted him to reflect on political accountability and leadership responsibility.
In a post shared on X, Obi recalled how Tinubu, before becoming president, repeatedly criticised former President Goodluck Jonathan over insecurity and economic hardship, even calling for his resignation during the Chibok schoolgirls’ abduction crisis.
According to Obi, the same standards Tinubu applied to previous administrations should also be applied to his own government.
The former Labour Party presidential candidate also pointed to promises Tinubu made during the 2023 election campaign, including commitments to improve electricity supply, strengthen security, fight corruption and improve the welfare of citizens.
Obi argued that many of those promises remain unfulfilled, claiming that insecurity, economic hardship and power supply challenges have worsened since Tinubu assumed office.
“I, therefore, join Nigerians of goodwill in calling for the resignation of the President over monumental failure in governance,” Obi stated.
He maintained that such a move would promote accountability in public office and reinforce the principle that leaders should take responsibility for their performance while in power.
The comments have already sparked fresh political debate, with supporters and critics weighing in on Obi’s call for the president to step down.
