Abia State Governor Alex Otti has commended United Nigeria Airlines for naming two of its newly acquired aircraft after literary icon Chinua Achebe and the Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Alfred Nnaemeka Achebe.
Speaking during the unveiling ceremony in Lagos, Otti described the gesture as a proud recognition of two distinguished figures whose contributions have left a lasting impact on society.
According to the governor, the decision reflects the values of excellence, leadership, integrity and cultural pride that the two men represent.
“For remembering to honour our people, you will be honoured,” Otti said.
One of the Boeing 737-800NG aircraft was named after the late Chinua Achebe, whose novel Things Fall Apart remains one of Africa’s most celebrated literary works.
The second aircraft was dedicated to the Obi of Onitsha in recognition of his contributions to traditional leadership, public service and corporate governance.
United Nigeria Airlines Chairman, Prof. Obiora Okonkwo, said the honour was a deliberate effort to celebrate individuals whose achievements continue to inspire generations.
The event attracted top political leaders, business executives, traditional rulers and aviation stakeholders who praised the initiative and highlighted the contributions of the Igbo people to national development.
Meanwhile, Otti also provided an update on the proposed Abia Airport project, revealing that plans for the facility are progressing steadily.
The governor thanked Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo for supporting aviation development and infrastructure projects across the country.
Guests at the event described the aircraft naming ceremony as a celebration of excellence, leadership and the enduring legacy of two respected Nigerian figures.
