Grammy-winning Nigerian singer Tems is set to share the stage with music legends Stevie Wonder and John Legend at the official opening of the Barack Obama Presidential Center in Chicago.
The highly anticipated event, scheduled for Thursday, will celebrate the launch of the landmark centre, which will serve as a museum, library, educational hub, and home to the Obama Foundation.
Former U.S. President Barack Obama announced the star-studded lineup through a playful Instagram video, revealing that Tems will perform alongside several globally renowned artists.
Other performers billed for the opening include Bono & The Edge, Bruce Springsteen, Christina Aguilera, Common, Eddie Vedder, Jennifer Hudson, Marc Anthony, and The Roots.
The event is expected to attract global attention as the centre opens its doors to the public, offering spaces dedicated to leadership, community engagement, education, and cultural development.
Former First Lady Michelle Obama also reflected on the significance of the project, describing it as a deeply personal achievement.
“The opening of the Presidential Center right here on the South Side of Chicago is truly a full circle moment,” she said.
Michelle recalled growing up near the area and watching it transform from an underutilised space into a centre designed to inspire future generations.
“The notion that kids like me will have a magnificent space full of history, and hope, and art, and leadership activity right in their backyard. There is nothing more full circle like that,” she added.
Adding a Nigerian connection to the project, Nigerian-American artist Njideka Akunyili-Crosby, daughter of the late Dora Akunyili, recently created a portrait of Barack and Michelle Obama for the presidential centre.
Tems’ inclusion in the opening ceremony further highlights her growing international influence and places her among some of the most celebrated names in global music.
