The South East chapter of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has distanced itself from the recent endorsement of President Bola Tinubu’s second-term bid by some governors from the region.
The party insisted that the endorsement does not represent the views of the Igbo people and should be regarded as a personal political decision by the governors involved.
The controversy followed an APC rally in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, where Governors Hope Uzodinma, Francis Nwifuru, and Chukwuma Soludo publicly backed President Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Reacting to the development, the ADC described the endorsement as disconnected from the realities facing many Nigerians, including rising living costs, insecurity, unemployment, and economic hardship.
In a statement, the party’s National Vice Chairman (South East), Sir Bon Unachukwu, argued that the governors lacked the mandate to speak on behalf of the entire South East region.
“The endorsement of President Tinubu by these governors is an endorsement of failure. It is an attempt to impose a political position on a people who are daily confronted with hunger, insecurity, unemployment and hopelessness,” Unachukwu said.
The ADC maintained that no objective assessment of the current administration’s performance would justify such an endorsement.
“Ndigbo cannot endorse failure, and Nigerians cannot reward suffering with another term in office,” he added.
The party also claimed that the South East continues to face challenges in areas such as infrastructure development, federal appointments, and economic investment despite promises of inclusion.
According to the ADC, many young people in the region remain frustrated by unemployment and limited economic opportunities.
The party further accused some political leaders of prioritising political interests over addressing the concerns of ordinary citizens.
“The South East ADC therefore rejects, in its entirety, the endorsement of President Tinubu by these governors. Such a position does not reflect the views of Ndigbo,” the statement said.
The development adds another dimension to the growing political debate ahead of the 2027 elections, with parties already positioning themselves for the next electoral cycle.
