Japan staged a dramatic late comeback to earn a thrilling 2-2 draw against the Netherlands in their opening match of the FIFA World Cup, with an 88th-minute goal ensuring both sides shared the points in Texas.
In front of more than 69,000 fans, the highly anticipated Group F clash delivered excitement, goals, and plenty of drama as both teams showcased why many consider them potential dark horses at the tournament.
The Netherlands struck first shortly after halftime when captain Virgil van Dijk powered home a superb header from a Ryan Gravenberch cross to give the Dutch the lead.
Japan responded almost immediately through Keito Nakamura, who fired past goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen to restore parity and spark life into the contest.
