Kylian Mbappé has revealed that winning the Ballon d’Or would carry a special meaning for him, saying he hopes to dedicate the prestigious award to Africa if he takes home the prize.
The France captain, who plays for Real Madrid, spoke about his African heritage in an interview with RFI while discussing his hopes for this year’s award.
Mbappé was born and raised in France, but his father is from Cameroon while his mother has Algerian roots. He said his African background has remained an important part of his upbringing and identity.
The 27-year-old stressed that he has never distanced himself from his origins, despite growing up and building his football career in France.
Mbappé has also maintained a strong connection with Africa over the years. In 2023, he visited Cameroon, including Yaoundé, Douala and Djebale, where his father’s family has roots.
During the trip, he visited schools supported by his foundation and met with Cameroonian officials.
Reflecting on his experiences on the continent, Mbappé said he has always felt warmly welcomed whenever he visits Africa.
Although he has African heritage, Mbappé has consistently represented France internationally. He explained that his decision was natural because he was born and raised in France and grew up within French culture.
The Real Madrid forward is among the nominees for the 2026 Ballon d’Or, with the winner set to be announced at a ceremony in London on October 26.
If he wins, Mbappé would become the latest player with African heritage to claim the award, joining names such as George Weah, Karim Benzema, Zinedine Zidane and Ousmane Dembélé.
Mbappé is chasing the first Ballon d’Or of his career after another impressive campaign with Real Madrid.
He finished the 2025/26 La Liga season as the competition’s top scorer with 25 goals and added 15 goals in the Champions League and two in the Copa del Rey.
Overall, he finished the season with 42 goals in 44 appearances for the Spanish giants.
For Mbappé, however, the award would mean more than personal recognition. He hopes that, if he wins, the achievement can also serve as a tribute to the continent connected to his family roots.
