ADC chieftain and former Labour Party campaign spokesman, Kenneth Okonkwo, has stirred fresh political debate ahead of the 2027 presidential election, declaring that any vote cast for Peter Obi would ultimately work in favour of President Bola Tinubu.
Speaking during an interview with Symfoni TV, Okonkwo argued that the opposition must unite behind a single platform if it hopes to unseat the incumbent president. According to him, a divided opposition would only split votes and increase Tinubu’s chances of securing another term in office.
Okonkwo claimed that Obi’s reported exit from coalition talks within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) weakened efforts to build a united opposition front. He also criticised the former Anambra governor for allegedly avoiding a competitive primary process, insisting that leadership requires the courage to face political challenges.
The former Labour Party spokesman further alleged that some political figures from the South-East had previously advocated a strategic alliance with northern politicians as the region’s best path to producing a president. He claimed discussions around such a strategy were not embraced by Obi.
Maintaining his position, Okonkwo warned opposition supporters to carefully consider their choices ahead of the 2027 election, stressing that any vote outside a united opposition movement could indirectly strengthen the ruling APC.
His comments have since generated reactions across the political space, with supporters and critics debating whether opposition unity will be the deciding factor in the next presidential contest.
