The Chairman of the Accord Party in Osun State, Asimiyu Ajibola, is currently receiving medical treatment after surviving a suspected assassination attempt by gunmen in Osogbo.
According to the Osun State Police Command, the attack occurred late Wednesday night in the MDS area of Osogbo when two armed men riding on a motorcycle reportedly opened fire on the politician before fleeing the scene.
Police authorities said officers responded immediately after receiving a distress call and quickly evacuated the victim to a hospital. Ajibola was later admitted to the University of Osun Teaching Hospital, where doctors confirmed that he is in stable condition and responding positively to treatment.
The incident has sparked concern among residents and political stakeholders, with security agencies launching an intensive investigation into the attack.
In a statement, the Osun Police Command disclosed that exhibits were recovered from the scene and have been sent for forensic examination as part of ongoing efforts to identify those behind the shooting.
The Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Gotan, condemned the attack and ordered a full-scale investigation, directing all relevant units to deploy available resources to track down the suspects and bring them to justice.
Police said an aggressive manhunt is already underway and appealed to members of the public to provide useful information that could assist in locating the attackers.
The shooting comes amid growing security concerns across parts of the South-West, following recent cases of kidnappings and attacks in neighbouring states.
Authorities have assured residents that no stone will be left unturned in the investigation as efforts continue to uncover the motive behind the attack and apprehend those responsible.
