Lionel Messi has announced his retirement from international football, bringing an end to his illustrious career with Argentina after leading the country to a second successive World Cup final.
The 39-year-old confirmed his decision on Monday, saying the choice was painful but that he believed it was the right time to step away from the national team.
“It was a decision that hurt and still hurts deep in my soul but I understand that it is the right time.”
Messi said he had always given everything for Argentina, both during the years when the team won major trophies and before those successes.
He led Argentina to World Cup glory in 2022, defeating France on penalties in the final in Doha. Four years later, Argentina reached another final but lost 1-0 to Spain.
‘I Have Nothing More to Give’
In his farewell statement, Messi said his decision followed considerable reflection after the 2026 World Cup final.
“I love, I loved, and I will always love being part of the national team.”
The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner said he believed the time had come for a new generation of Argentine players to take over.
“I gave everything I had, and I don’t have anything more to give.”
Messi also thanked his supporters for their love throughout his 20-year international career, saying he would miss experiencing their support from inside the national team but would continue backing Argentina from the outside.
He expressed gratitude to his family, coaches, teammates and officials who accompanied him throughout his career, saying he would leave with unforgettable memories.
Messi’s Argentina Legacy
Messi leaves the international stage as one of Argentina’s greatest players, having helped the country win the 2022 World Cup and two Copa América titles.
His decision also comes after the death of his father, Jorge Messi, in August. Following the loss, Messi had expressed doubts about continuing to play football for much longer.
The forward remains contracted to Major League Soccer club Inter Miami until the end of the 2028 season, meaning his retirement from international football does not necessarily mark the end of his playing career.
Messi said he had written his farewell statement on July 21, two days after the World Cup final, but that events surrounding his father had made him even more convinced about his decision.
He ended his message with a tribute to his country:
“Thank you God for making me Argentine.”
