Nigeria’s pension industry has reached a new milestone, with total pension assets climbing to an all-time high of N30.94 trillion in April 2026, according to the latest figures released by the National Pension Commission (PenCom).
The new record represents a 4.8 percent increase from the N29.52 trillion recorded in March, highlighting continued growth in the country’s pension sector and investment market.
According to PenCom’s unaudited pension industry portfolio report for the period ending April 30, 2026, pension assets expanded by approximately N1.42 trillion within a single month.
A major driver of the growth was the sharp rise in investments in the stock market. The value of pension funds invested in domestic equities increased significantly, rising from N5.46 trillion in March to N6.51 trillion in April.
Despite the increase in equity investments, Federal Government securities remained the largest component of pension assets, accounting for N17.36 trillion, which represents more than half of the industry’s total portfolio.
The report also showed moderate growth in other investment categories. Holdings in money market instruments rose to N2.66 trillion, while investments in corporate debt securities recorded a slight increase.
One of the most notable gains came from infrastructure investments, which jumped from N224.23 billion to N312.61 billion during the month. Private equity investments also remained strong at N256.96 billion.
However, not every asset class recorded growth. PenCom noted that investments in mutual funds declined, dropping from N341.79 billion in March to N262.58 billion in April.
Meanwhile, participation in the pension scheme continued to grow. The number of Retirement Savings Account (RSA) holders increased by 49,222 contributors, pushing total membership from 11.18 million in March to 11.23 million in April 2026.
The latest figures underscore the continued expansion of Nigeria’s pension industry, with growing investments and increasing participation helping to drive the sector to record levels.
