Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodinma, has warned that Nigeria’s democracy could be endangered if opposition parties fail to provide strong competition against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 elections.
Uzodinma made the statement on Saturday during the APC presidential primary where President Bola Tinubu emerged overwhelmingly supported for a second-term ticket.
According to the governor, democracy cannot function properly without a vibrant opposition capable of challenging the ruling party.
He urged opposition parties to organise themselves better and build stronger political structures instead of complaining about the dominance of the APC.
Uzodinma stated that political parties must work hard to earn public support, adding that every party would eventually have its opportunity if it remains organised and connected to the people.
The governor also declared that the APC’s growing grassroots structure has already positioned the party strongly ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
He pointed to the party’s electronic membership registration exercise, which he said helped expand participation and strengthen grassroots mobilisation across the country.
According to him, the large turnout recorded during the APC primary reflects the growing acceptance of the party and President Tinubu among Nigerians.
Uzodinma claimed that the scale of APC membership and mobilisation already shows that Tinubu is in a strong position ahead of the next general election.
He further praised President Tinubu’s leadership style, insisting that the President has done enough to deserve another term in office.
The governor commended Tinubu for what he described as proper political organisation and strategic leadership within the APC.
His comments come as political parties continue positioning themselves and building alliances ahead of the 2027 election cycle.
The latest statement is expected to spark political reactions, especially from opposition parties preparing to challenge the APC in the next presidential election.
