Ghana Star Scores Brilliant Winner As Guardiola’s Side Defeat Chelsea 1-0 At Wembley
Antoine Semenyo produced a moment of brilliance to hand Manchester City a dramatic 1-0 victory over Chelsea in the FA Cup final at Wembley on Saturday, scoring a sensational backheel goal that secured another major trophy for Pep Guardiola’s side.
The Ghanaian winger became the hero of the night after improvising an audacious finish late in the second half, calmly flicking Erling Haaland’s dangerous cross into the net with a stylish backheel that left Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez helpless.
Semenyo’s magical strike proved enough to seal Manchester City’s eighth FA Cup title and their second trophy of the season following their League Cup triumph earlier in March.
The spectacular goal instantly placed the 26-year-old among the list of players remembered for iconic FA Cup final moments, alongside famous names such as Ricky Villa, Michael Owen, Roberto Di Matteo and Steven Gerrard.
Ironically, Semenyo — who joined City from Bournemouth during the January transfer window — was born only a short distance from Chelsea’s Stamford Bridge stadium in west London.
The victory also ended Manchester City’s recent frustrations in the competition after suffering defeats in their previous two FA Cup finals against Crystal Palace and Manchester United.
For Guardiola, the triumph marked his third FA Cup title as Manchester City manager after previously winning the competition in 2019 and 2023.
The Spanish coach has now won 20 trophies during his remarkable decade-long reign at the club, further cementing his legacy as one of the most successful managers in football history.
Despite the cup success, Guardiola’s attention will quickly shift back to the Premier League title race, where City are still chasing leaders Arsenal with only a few matches remaining this season.
Manchester City entered the final on an impressive 21-match unbeaten domestic run and could reduce Arsenal’s lead if results go in their favour during the closing fixtures of the campaign.
Ahead of the match, Guardiola jokingly remarked that he was disappointed Wembley had not yet named a stand after him despite his numerous appearances and successes at the stadium.
Questions about Guardiola’s future at City also continue to dominate discussions, with uncertainty remaining over whether the 55-year-old will stay beyond the final year of his contract.
If this eventually turns out to be Guardiola’s final season at the club, Semenyo’s unforgettable goal has at least ensured another historic Wembley memory for the manager and Manchester City supporters.
For Chelsea, however, the defeat added to what has already been another disappointing and unstable campaign.
The London club arrived at Wembley struggling for form after failing to win any of their last seven league matches, leaving their hopes of qualifying for next season’s Champions League almost impossible.
Under interim manager Calum McFarlane, Chelsea delivered a disciplined but ultimately ineffective performance that reflected the frustrations currently surrounding the club.
Ahead of kick-off, sections of Chelsea supporters staged protests against the club’s owners, BlueCo, while chanting demands for the return of the club’s former identity and direction.
Manchester City controlled possession for much of the first half but struggled to break down Chelsea’s compact five-man defensive setup.
Erling Haaland came close on several occasions, first firing wide after winning possession near Chelsea’s penalty area before later forcing a strong save from Robert Sanchez with a powerful strike from a tight angle.
Chelsea threatened mainly through counter-attacks and felt they should have been awarded a penalty shortly before halftime after Joao Pedro appeared to be brought down inside the box by Abdukodir Khusanov, but officials waved away the appeals.
City nearly took the lead immediately after the restart when Semenyo headed over from close range following a cross from Nico O’Reilly.
Chelsea also had a major opportunity when Moises Caicedo’s header was cleared off the line by Rodri after goalkeeper James Trafford failed to deal properly with a corner.
However, the decisive moment finally arrived in the 72nd minute when Haaland made a dangerous run into the Chelsea penalty area before cutting the ball back toward Semenyo.
The winger reacted brilliantly, producing a clever backheel finish that curled into the far corner and ultimately sealed victory for Manchester City on a memorable night at Wembley.
