Seamus Coleman is set to bring an emotional end to his long-standing journey with Everton FC after the club confirmed that the veteran defender will leave at the end of the current season, closing a historic 17-year chapter at Goodison Park.
The Republic of Ireland captain departs as one of Everton’s modern-day legends after establishing himself as the club’s highest Premier League appearance holder with an impressive 372 league matches and 433 appearances in all competitions.
Coleman, who joined Everton from Sligo Rovers in 2009 as a relatively unknown young defender, rose through the ranks to become one of the most respected captains in the club’s history.
The 37-year-old right-back has captained the Toffees on 140 occasions and earned admiration from supporters for his loyalty, leadership and consistency throughout nearly two decades at the Merseyside club.
However, persistent injury problems over the last three seasons significantly limited his playing time, with the defender managing only 23 appearances during that period.
Despite his reduced role on the pitch, Everton reportedly offered Coleman an opportunity to remain at the club in a coaching capacity as part of efforts to preserve his experience and leadership within the team structure.
Speaking emotionally about his departure, Coleman reflected on his incredible journey from Ireland to the Premier League, admitting he never imagined achieving such legendary status at Everton.
The veteran defender explained that when he first arrived from Sligo Rovers as a 20-year-old player, his only ambition was simply to impress enough to make the substitute bench for matches.
According to him, becoming Everton’s captain and eventually setting the record for the club’s most Premier League appearances exceeded every dream he had at the start of his career.
Coleman also expressed deep appreciation to Everton for the support and loyalty the club showed him throughout his career, especially during difficult moments involving injuries and setbacks.
The Irish international praised the club’s management and coaching staff for offering him the opportunity to continue his association with Everton beyond his playing days.
However, he stated that he has not yet made a final decision regarding his future and intends to take time away after the season to carefully reflect on the next stage of his career.
Coleman added that he plans to enjoy a long holiday while looking back on what he described as an unforgettable and special period as an Everton footballer.
His departure will mark the end of an era for Everton supporters, many of whom regard him as one of the club’s most loyal servants and influential captains in the Premier League era.
