Elon Musk is making a bold move into the semiconductor industry with a massive new project planned for Texas.
His company, SpaceX, is reportedly preparing a multibillion-dollar investment to build a large-scale chip manufacturing facility aimed at powering artificial intelligence, robotics, and space-based computing systems.
According to a public notice released on Wednesday, SpaceX plans to invest at least $55 billion in the proposed facility, which will be known as “Terafab.”
The project is expected to be jointly operated by SpaceX and Tesla, marking a significant expansion of Musk’s technology ecosystem into advanced chip production.
If fully developed in multiple phases, the total investment could rise to as much as $119 billion, making it one of the largest semiconductor projects ever proposed in the United States.
The facility will be located in Grimes County, Texas, about 70 miles northwest of Houston. Local officials have described the initiative as a major industrial breakthrough with the potential to strengthen America’s domestic chip manufacturing capacity.
PURPOSE OF THE PROJECT
Although Musk does not have a direct background in semiconductor manufacturing, he has consistently argued that his companies will require far greater computing power in the future.
He believes that the rapid growth of artificial intelligence systems, robotics, and space technology will soon exceed the capacity of global chip suppliers.
As a result, the “Terafab” project is designed to support in-house production of advanced chips tailored specifically for Tesla and SpaceX technologies.
The proposal outlines an ambitious goal of producing chips capable of supporting between 100 and 200 gigawatts of computing power on Earth, as well as a terawatt-scale computing system for space applications.
If achieved, this would position the facility as a critical hub for next-generation computing infrastructure.
Authorities in Grimes County are already reviewing the proposal, with the Commissioners Court expected to meet on June 3 to consider possible tax incentives, including a property tax abatement.
If approved, the project could proceed with strong local government backing, further boosting its chances of becoming a reality.
If completed, the “Terafab” project would represent one of the most ambitious industrial investments in modern U.S. technology history. With a projected value reaching $119 billion, the initiative signals Elon Musk’s continued push to control key technologies powering the future of AI, robotics, and space computing.
