The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has defended its decision to increase airport cab operational charges and insists that drivers must upgrade their vehicles before the October 2026 deadline.
In a statement released on Friday, FAAN said the policy is aimed at improving passenger safety, comfort and service quality, not to punish airport taxi operators.
The authority explained that discussions on the vehicle upgrade began in July 2024, with the compliance deadline extended several times to allow operators enough time to meet the new standards. FAAN said it is considering one final extension until October 2026, warning that no further extensions will be granted after that date.
The agency also justified increasing the operational tariff from ₦500 to ₦1,500, noting that the previous rate had remained unchanged for over eight years despite rising operational costs.
According to FAAN, the reforms are designed to align Nigeria’s airport transport services with international standards while ensuring passengers enjoy safer, cleaner and more reliable taxi services.
The authority urged airport cab operators to support the initiative and work together to improve the quality of transportation services at the nation’s airports.
