Nigerian rapper Ycee has sparked conversations online after speaking out against what he believes is a growing culture of celebrating ignorance and discouraging education among young Nigerians.
The rapper made the remarks during a podcast interview shared on Instagram, where he expressed concern over the values being promoted on social media and in society.
According to Ycee, many young people now place more value on internet fame and controversial content than education and intellectual growth.
“It’s like we are trying so much to accommodate unintelligent people and ignorant people because we don’t want them to feel bad,” he said.
The music star also lamented what he described as a decline in Nigeria’s educational standards, arguing that academic excellence is gradually losing its place in society.
Ycee criticised the growing popularity of what he called “Yahoo culture” and “Peller culture,” saying the trend encourages the wrong values and influences young people to chase attention instead of knowledge.
His comments quickly generated mixed reactions online, with many social media users agreeing that education and critical thinking deserve more recognition.
Veteran actress Kate Henshaw also reacted, saying society now rewards content that offers little value while discouraging meaningful conversations.
Other users shared personal experiences, with some claiming children who enjoy reading are often mocked by their peers, while others argued that viral online behaviour is damaging Nigeria’s image globally.
The discussion has since sparked a wider debate about youth culture, education and the influence of social media in Nigeria.
