The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested a Nigerian-American citizen over an alleged vehicle import fraud involving more than ₦434 million.
The suspect, identified as Adegoke Oluwatobi Adams, is being investigated for alleged criminal breach of trust and obtaining money under false pretences.
According to the anti-graft agency, Adams allegedly operated as part of a US-based syndicate accused of deceiving Nigerians with promises of importing luxury vehicles from the United States.
The EFCC said the suspect allegedly advertised a 2024 Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG and convinced prospective buyers that the vehicle would be purchased and shipped to Nigeria.
Investigators claim that two victims paid a combined total of over $320,000 for the luxury SUV after receiving assurances that the vehicle would be delivered.
One of the victims reportedly paid $145,000 through an intermediary, while another allegedly transferred $175,000.
The commission further revealed that Adams allegedly has a previous criminal history in the United States linked to the unlawful acquisition of vehicles.
According to the EFCC, the suspect was arrested shortly after returning to Nigeria and is currently assisting investigators.
The agency stated that he will be charged in court once investigations are completed.
The case has once again highlighted the growing risks associated with online vehicle import transactions and cross-border fraud schemes targeting unsuspecting buyers.
