Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has unveiled two newly acquired Boeing 737-800NG aircraft named in honour of legendary author Chinua Achebe and the Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Alfred Nnaemeka Achebe.
The aircraft, acquired by United Nigeria Airlines, were officially presented at a colourful ceremony in Lagos attended by political leaders, traditional rulers, business executives and aviation stakeholders.
Speaking at the event, Otti described the gesture as a fitting recognition of two respected Igbo figures whose contributions to literature, leadership and national development continue to inspire generations.
“For remembering to honour our people, you will be honoured,” the governor said.
One of the aircraft was named after the late Chinua Achebe, the celebrated author of Things Fall Apart, a novel widely regarded as one of Africa’s most influential literary works.|
The second aircraft was dedicated to the Obi of Onitsha, Alfred Achebe, in recognition of his achievements in traditional leadership, public service and corporate governance.
United Nigeria Airlines Chairman, Prof. Obiora Okonkwo, explained that the decision was intentional, noting that both men represent excellence, service and the rich heritage of the Igbo people.
The ceremony attracted widespread praise from dignitaries who described the initiative as a celebration of culture, achievement and national pride.
Governor Otti also used the occasion to provide an update on the proposed Abia Airport project, revealing that significant progress had been made on the development.
He commended the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, for supporting aviation reforms and the airport project.
In response, Keyamo praised Otti’s commitment to aviation infrastructure and assured the state of continued federal support.
The event ended with the official unveiling of the aircraft as guests applauded the recognition of two personalities whose legacies continue to impact Nigeria and beyond.
