The Federal Government has disbursed about ₦13 billion in interest-free loans to 7,450 academic and non-academic staff across public tertiary institutions nationwide.
The intervention was carried out under the Tertiary Institutions Staff Support Fund (TISSF), a programme designed to improve the welfare and financial wellbeing of workers in Nigeria’s higher education sector.
According to the Federal Ministry of Education, the scheme provides eligible staff with access to loans of up to ₦10 million to support personal and professional needs.
The ministry said the initiative reflects the Tinubu administration’s commitment to supporting education workers and strengthening the country’s tertiary education system.
Speaking on the programme, Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, described the fund as an important part of ongoing efforts to improve staff welfare and boost productivity in higher institutions.
He noted that no education system can perform beyond the quality and wellbeing of the people who sustain it.
Since the launch of the programme, more than 42,000 applications have reportedly been processed through the digital platform, with beneficiaries spread across universities, polytechnics and colleges of education nationwide.
The ministry disclosed that universities accounted for the largest share of beneficiaries, while polytechnics and colleges of education also recorded significant participation.
Officials added that preparations are already underway for the next phase of the programme, with applications for the 2026/2027 cycle expected to open later this month.
The government said the initiative remains part of broader efforts to improve teaching, research, innovation and staff welfare across Nigeria’s tertiary institutions.
