A Nigerian student in the United Kingdom has been sentenced to five-and-a-half years in prison after being found guilty of attempted rape and sexual assault following an incident involving a woman in Hull.
The convict, 27-year-old Qudus Ajeyemi, popularly known as “Spartan,” was convicted after a six-day trial at Hull Crown Court.
According to court proceedings, the incident occurred in early 2023 after the victim attended a gathering following a night out. The woman, who had consumed alcohol and was feeling unwell, was reportedly offered a room to rest.
However, prosecutors told the court that instead of leaving her to sleep, Ajeyemi allegedly began making unwanted advances towards her.
“She pushed him off and told him: ‘I’m not here for that,’” prosecutor Charlotte Baines told the court.
Despite her resistance, the court heard that the defendant allegedly continued his actions, forcing the woman to flee the room in distress.
The victim later reported the incident and preserved evidence, including messages and conversations in which Ajeyemi reportedly apologised and admitted wrongdoing.
The evidence played a key role in the police investigation that eventually led to his prosecution.
Following his conviction, the court sentenced Ajeyemi to five-and-a-half years imprisonment. He was also placed on the Sex Offenders Register for life and handed a seven-year restraining order.
In addition, UK authorities ordered that he be deported to Nigeria after completing his prison sentence.
Detective Sergeant Ethan Anderson of Humberside Police praised the victim for her courage throughout the legal process.
“Reporting this type of crime is never easy and she has displayed nothing but immense bravery and strength throughout the complex and lengthy process,” he said.
The officer added that law enforcement remains committed to ensuring offenders are brought to justice and encouraged victims of sexual offences to come forward when they are ready.
The case has attracted significant attention, particularly due to the court’s decision to impose both a lengthy prison sentence and a deportation order.
