FIFA has announced a major change to the traditional World Cup pre-match ceremony, revealing that every player named in a matchday squad will now take part in the on-field presentation before kickoff.
Under the new format, all selected players — not just the starting eleven — will walk onto the pitch through a special entrance arch accompanied by youth escorts before assembling for the national anthems.
The updated ceremony marks a significant departure from previous tournaments, where only the starting players lined up at the centre of the field before matches.
FIFA also disclosed that large national flag displays will be featured on both sides of the pitch during the pre-match proceedings, adding a new visual element to the occasion.
According to the world football governing body, the change is intended to ensure that every squad member experiences the pride and honour of representing their country on football’s biggest stage.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino said the initiative will help create a stronger sense of unity, pride, and emotion by bringing players and match officials together during the national anthem ceremony.
The new format will make its debut at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
The tournament is scheduled to run from June 11 to July 19, 2026, and will also make history as the first FIFA World Cup to feature 48 participating nations, expanding from the previous 32-team format.
With the expanded competition and revamped matchday presentation, FIFA says fans can expect a more inclusive and memorable World Cup experience.
